When I was younger I used to categorize people into leaders and followers. Leaders would be the head of the pack, the one who made decisions, had an opinion and something to say. Leaders would always surge ahead and well, lead. Followers, on the other hand, usually follow behind the leaders, letting the leaders experiment and test and when the leader deems what ever it is they doing safe, the followers follow. Followers usually just listen to everything a leader says and they back it up. Followers are usually the people who are a bit more cautious or scared.
There’s nothing wrong with being a follower, I used to be a follower. But something I’ve learned is that you can’t always be the follower. You need to reach past your comfort zone, I know it’s hard but little steps are fine. Just one foot in front of the other. When you are a follower you always wait until someone else tries before you do, it’s still a problem I have. The thing with this is that, for somethings you’re going to end up waiting forever. You’ll watch everyone else go farther, you’ll watch everyone soar while you are still creeping to the edge of the nest.
As someone who used to be a follower I don’t think you necessarily need to be a leader either. Instead I like doing something I call Being a Leader Amongst Leaders. In other words, it’s not being a leader or a follower but just being around people who have their own opinions and make their own decisions. These people would be classified as leaders when they around followers but when they are around other leaders their title cancels out. Suddenly, you don’t lead anyone, people may not agree with you and you are not in the controlling position. I think that this a good position to be in because you are exposed to different views and thoughts. It’s one of the best ways to grow as a person.
So go out into the big wide world and if you are a follower, edge your way out of your comfort zone, if you are a leader, help followers become leaders. But most importantly, go out and meet all different kinds of people and become a better person yourself.
